How have changes in the workforce during the past 20 years affected organisational policies?
The world has entered a new transitional period since the past 20 years. It is a common phenomenon that happens to the world, changes that are simply inevitable, as a result of creativity, innovation and ingenuity. In ways, these changes have vastly affected organisational policies. There was a time where the human race was judged by the colour of their skin, by the money they have, by the religion they believe, by the age group they are in. Discrimination was practised all over the world, particularly in the less developed countries, where the gap was too big between the rich and the poor. Diversity is basically the acknowledgment and tolerance for difference which involves understanding and appreciating interdependence of humanity, cultures, and the natural environment. Nowadays, organisations have policies on diversity which protects its employees. Discrimination is becoming history as all people are treated fairly. Everyone gets the same salary and treatment. Equality rights are encouraging people from different races and countries to work together. There is also a sudden discovery of talents as a result of the changing policies. For example, some compananies are hiring people from different countries and giving them the same pay as the local citizens. Technology has always been vital to our lives. Organisations around the world are utilising the improving technologies resulting changes in organisational policies. The invention of internet has made the world borderless. Office hours of organisations are getting more and more flexible. In some organisation, employees can choose to work at home, as long as they meet the minimum quota or hours per day. During the past, plagiarism was not much of a crime and people could not do anything even though their ideas were being stolen. Nowadays, due to technological changes, a person’s intellectual property is more prone to lifting, and this form of stealing is widely practised thru the internet. Thus, policies have been introduced to protect these intellectual properties, where if caught, the ‘thief’ might be put into custody. For the past 20 years, policies on health and safety in the working environment are evolving as human rights are being fought after. It has been a thing of the past, where workers are forced to work even though they are sick. They were required to work for long hours which may affect their health greatly. Organisations nowadays are protecting their employees, for example, labourers are insured by accident policies if they are injured accidentally. Government agencies provide hundred percent subsidy for clinical fee and partial subsidy for hospital medical fees. Employees are also given sick and maternity leaves so that they can rest and recover at home. In some companies especially in multi-national corporations like Intel and Agilent, exercising facilities such as gyms, swimming pools and tennis courts are provided in such that their employees can maintain a healthy lifestyle. Before wrapping things up, it is apparent that the changes in organisational policies during the past 20 years are rather important. It has brought the people of the world together, and also allowing the less fortunate to be part of the developing world. People are living in a better environment compared to the past. People are also more ready for challenges, obstacles, as they are given the chance to shine, to show how good they are for the world. |
